Crush It! for Online Marketers

Just want to say that Crush It! by Gary Vaynerchuk is a great book for understanding that anyone with a passion for something can turn that passion into a business using the internet.

This isn't a new concept, but Gary Vaynerchuk has graciously explained why you should cash in on your passion and create the life you want.

What I like about his style is that he tells it like it is.  He says it takes hard work and patience.  Gary says that patience is the "secret to the sauce."

Crush It! gets you to think about your passions and whether or not you can talk about them better than anyone else.  He wants you to think about which platforms are best for touting your passions.  You might be better at writing than video, or video better than audio.

I like his authenticity.  You would never guess that this guy is a wine connossieur by his personality, but he is so real and so good at what he does and he's passionate! This is the kind of person who inspires me. Someone who takes what they love and shares it with those who would be interested.  Notice I say would be. He had to find those who would be and get them to be involved in his mission.

If you don't have the book, head over to my recommendation/tools page, scroll down and click the link to review the book.

Enjoy and get crushin!

Your Online Marketing Library

It dawned on me while I was studying to be an online marketer what tools I was using that were so helpful to me.  While there are a lot of resources on the internet, I would have missed out on so much if I didn’t purchase a few books to supplement what I was receiving online.

Education begins with reading and there’s no better resource than a great book – especially if it teaches you, inspires you and motivates you to keep learning.  Plus, books are mobile.  You can take them into the bathroom, into your bed, on your camping trip or anywhere you might be residing.  You can highlight your favorite passages, turn the corner of the pages and pass them along to help a friend.

Here are 7 must have books for online marketing:

1) Word Press for Dummies by Lisa Sabin Wilson – If you don’t have a WordPress.org site, you should get one.  This is, in my opinion, the best platform for creating content available on the web.  It gives you freedom and is so flexible and you own it, so having WordPress is nothing but winning for you.  You will need some supplemental information besides what you get online, so get this book if you have WordPress!

2) Web Copy that Sells – by Maria Veloso – This is an amazing book that will transform the way you write copy for online marketing.  This book is the culmination of years of experience and research in the world of copywriting and it is written for anyone who has a desire to improve their writing skills for marketing.  If you have a website, you will be writing copy, so arm yourself!

3) Social Media Marketing for Dummies – by Shiv Singh – This is a great introduction into the world of social media and anyone interested in this subject should have this book.  It seems to be written with the corporate perspective in mind, but independent entrepreneurs will benefit as well.

4) all a twitter – by Tee Moris – I bought this book when I wanted to truly understand twitter.  It keeps evolving like everything else, but this books helps you evaluate what you should be saying in your tweets and what would be inappropriate.

5) Email Marketing – by Simms Jenkins – This is really “the truth about email marketing” and is chock full of great advice for online marketers.

6) HTML for the World Wide Web – by Elizabeth Castro – You don’t need to know a lot about html to have a website – especially if you have a WordPress site; however, it’s good to be familiar with code source so you can understand the language and “tweak” your pages as you like.

7) You Are What You Think – by David Stoop, Ph.D – This book has more to do with your mindset and your thinking.  Dr. Stoop gives you reasons why you think the way you do and helps you to overcome past hurts and issues so you can live a life with purpose.  Do not underestimate this resource.  If you have any doubts about yourself, you should read this book.

These books can be interchanged with other books with similar content, but the point is that you will benefit from having these special resources by your side. Have fun collecting your library of teaching tools!

Patience for Online Marketing

Have you ever wanted to throw your hands up and say, "That's it!  I'm done!  It's just not worth it."  Sometimes you just want to pull your hair out because some of the technical issues are a little beyond you and if only you had someone who could hold your hand and fix things for you, you'd make it to the next step.  If you have been researching the "how-to's" of online marketing and have thought about quitting altogether, you probably just need one major thing:  I call it patience.  See what I mean.

Why did I bother putting a video together on patience?  Because there are times when I have run out of it myself.  I had in the past, put aside my love for online marketing because it became so challenging.  But something kept me coming back.  I guess it's the desire to continue pursuing your dreams that keeps you going, but you have to remember that processing information and continuous study is what makes you great.  Hang in there!  Don't give up.  Find the help you need.  Pay for it if you have to.  This is not a free business or a free world.  Hard work pays off and it's way more satisfying when you've continued to move through your perceived obstacles.

Please let me know if this has been helpful to you.  If you already have all the patience in the world, your success is imminent. Thanks for stopping by!

Branding Yourself for Online Marketing

Branding is a term used for all kinds of marketing.  Dictionary.com defines brand as:  A distinguishing symbol, mark, logo, name, word, sentence, or a combination of these items that companies use to distinguish their product from others in the market.  The key word in this definition is “distinguishing”.  To distinguish means to recognize as different, to recognize the salient or individual features or characteristics of…

Branding is the method by which a company or person sets out to distinguish themselves from others, from the “competition”. The method begins with an outline of the features of the product, service, personality, corporate vision, organizational culture and the uniqueness of these things to the organization.  For example, Westin Hotels distinguishes themselves through their corporate culture of these words:  personal, instinctive and renewal.  These words or concepts permeate the entire corporation of Westin.  The company also has a brand of relaxation products called the “Heavenly” line.  There’s the Heavenly Bed, Heavenly Sheets, Heavenly Spa, Heavenly Robes, Heavenly Towels.  If you go to westin-hotelsathome.com you’ll see what I mean.  It is completely set apart from any other brand and it is very memorable.

For many online marketers – especially corporations who set up websites to promote their business – the branding is done way before the website appears online.  For individuals who want to market items and information online, it’s important to set yourself apart so your target audience understands who you are, what you are offering and what sets you apart.  So, how do you begin to brand yourself?

First, identify what you are passionate about.  What do you enjoy doing most?  For me, it’s teaching yoga.  Now, I don’t necessarily promote myself as a yoga teacher, but what I know about yoga and its effects on the mind and body can be used to help others integrate themselves more fully.  Integration is putting the parts of yourselves together in such a way that leaves you living harmoniously with yourself and others.  It’s about skillful living.  Skillful living is good for understanding and teaching online marketing.  Also, I have been involved in advertising, marketing, public relations, and online marketing for many years. Therefore, my gifts are helping others live more skillfully and integrating these teachings with online marketing.  Hence, the subhead: inspiring greatness for online marketing

Second, identify what makes you unique.  There are a lot of online marketers out there competing for the attention of shoppers. What makes you more attractive than your competition?  What qualities and character traits do you have that would make someone want to opt-in to your information system?  Are you funny,  loyal,  smart,  witty,  truthful,  kind,  honest?  Do you specialize in copywriting, video marketing, viral marketing, WordPress design?  You get the point.  Those traits must be seen through your communication – whatever kind you are using.

Third, formulate the title of your website or blog and then use a subhead to identify what it is that you are marketing. You can use your name as the title of your website or a phrase that captures what kind of business you are representing.  You can then create a subtitle that identifies more clearly what you offer.  Until you have thoroughly thought this through, it will be difficult to become branded in the minds of your visitors.  I can’t stress this enough.  If you don’t follow these steps, you will flounder in your online marketing efforts.

Here's something to avoid:  When I run across websites that say, “$100,000 by Christmas”, I immediately shutter because I know two things right up front:  Number one, this is an unreasonable and unrealistic achievement.  And number two, it tells me that this person is cash hungry and doesn’t give a hoot about me.  He’s promoting an opportunity and all he cares about is flashing that opportunity in front of every eye he can.  I use “he” but it could be a “she” as well.

If you are serious about online marketing for your business, be real.  Take your time and figure out who you are and what you are capable of teaching before entering into the essential tasks of this type of business.  Time and money are precious.  You want to conserve both and work smart.  Be methodical.  Be professional.  Be patient.  Learn what marketing is and how to use the many tactics of marketing and study the profession before you jump in head first.  In fact, if you jump in heart first, you will have greater success in the long run.  Connect with yourself; then connect with others.

10 Free Things You Can Do To Start Your Online Marketing Business

The main hindrance to beginning an online marketing strategy is distraction.  The distraction comes from a lack of knowing what to do in this crazy internet world.  If you knew exactly what steps to take, it wouldn’t be so difficult.  You can spend a fortune buying e-books and “how to make a million” replicated websites.  It can be daunting to your mind and your pocketbook to begin the process of learning without having some guidance.  Here are 10 free things you can do to start your online marketing business.  If you do these without spending a penny, you will be working smarter and be more grounded in your daily business.  Resist the urge to buy for at least 30 days.

1)  Think.  That’s right.  Thinking is free and all it takes is a dedication of time to sort through your thoughts about what it is that you want to accomplish through internet marketing.  Do you want to make a lot of money?  Fine; but determine what exactly you will do with it and why you chose this method to earn it.  What are your gifts and talents?  What can you bring to the table that will help others?  What is meaningful to you?  Are you willing to put a lot of work and money up front to see your results?  Most people who start a traditional business need capital and a lot of planning to get started.  Ask yourself if you think this is different.

2)  Research – Plug this topic into the search engines and see if you find about a million different options for learning this craft. Spend time reading and absorbing the information without spending a dime.  Narrow your searches to the specific topics you need to learn about how to make online marketing a success.  For example, you might research how to be a good copywriter or how to write email marketing campaigns or how to understand analytics.  There are many sub-topics associated with internet marketing.

3)  Planning – Planning is crucial in determining how you are going to go about building your online business.  Would you go on vacation without a plan?  Would you build a building without a plan?  This is time well spent and doesn’t cost you anything. Decide if you will have a website, a blog, or both.  Decide if you will incorporate social media and which social media sites you will participate in.  Decide if you are willing to write articles.  Decide if you are able to provide valuable information for people. Know who your target market is and how you will reach them.  Create a strategy for gaining credibility and a following.

4)  Study – Studying is free.  There are many really good marketers out there who offer free video training series on internet marketing.  It’s worth signing up for them if you are “attracted” to the type of person who is making the free offer.  The trainers have to resonate with you.  Be choosy.  Spend 20-30 minutes per day studying what they have to say.  Take notes.  Start identifying how you want to come across to your target market.

5)  Blog – There are free blogs out there which are really great for practicing your craft.  I started two blogs before my current one and practiced on them for about a year.  You can build your writing and technical skills a little at a time with a blog.  It’s an amazing tool.  I recommend using the Word Press.com blog site as your free blog.  That way, when you are ready to spend some money, you can easily transfer the technical knowledge you learned there to the paid site, Word Press.org.  Know your skill level.  If you are not into website design, focus your efforts on what interests you, such as writing.  Eventually, you can pay to have someone design a great, professional looking site.

6)  Facebook – Set up a facebook page and begin to learn how to utilize it.  As popular as the site is, there are still many people who resist joining because they just don’t get it.  But you cannot be successful in online marketing if you don’t know how to work the social media sites, so get a facebook page, upload your picture and start sharing.

7)  Join Twitter – Twitter is a social networking tool that is also referred to as a micro blog.  Short bursts of information are sent out to be helpful.  When I signed up for Twitter, I had no idea how to use it.  I just signed up, created my profile, uploaded my picture and watched people start to follow me.  Eventually, I bought a book (okay this costs money), but there is a lot of free information online about how to use Twitter, so again, you don’t have to spend any money for this.  There is Twitter Etiquette and techniques that you should learn about, so keep researching on the best way to utilize this free tool.

8)  Start networking – I love this one.  There are people all over the world who are joining social networks like Ning.  Ning allows creators to set up communities of like-minded people.  They are free to join and you get to load your profile, picture and make friends, pick brains and learn from some of the best.  Many are new to online marketing, so you won’t feel alone if you are practicing your skills there.  Everyone is practicing every day.  As a yoga teacher, I like to emphasize that yoga is a practice.  We never stop practicing.

9)  Article Writing – This is a skill that can be developed by simply writing what you know about.  If you know a lot about photography, horses, parenting, health care, motorcycles, then you can begin writing about those things.  It doesn’t have to be about online marketing.  But you will want to start researching and writing about what you are learning in this field, because so many other people want to know how to work it.

10)  Join Squidoo or Hub Pages – Squidoo is a place where you can write about what you know and actually make money!  You can add your affiliate programs, pictures and all kinds of information.  Joining is free and starting your first “lens” is pretty simple. Hub Pages is similar and really easy to navigate.

There you have it.  10 free things.  It may seem elementary, but it makes sense.  My hope is that you avoid spending money on all kinds of reports and things without knowing specifically what you are looking for.  Be smart.  Learn first, and then spend when you can afford to spend.

Smooth Sailing to Social Media Success!
